Out: Drunken Pop Stars. In: Football Scandals

Tabloid editors long ago appreciated the spike in sales that can result thanks to a good football scandal.
But in recent times they have been spoilt for choice, whether it be X-rated Christmas parties (Liverpool, West Ham) or more serious offences such as drink-driving (Leeds' Eirik Bakke), drugs (former Man U' keeper Mark Bosnich), wife-beating (former England player Paul Gascoigne) and girlfriend-beating (former England striker Stan Collymore).
Said one-time Manchester United and Wales midefielder Mickey Thomas: "It feels like footballers are the new pop stars.
"I mean, who cares about a pop star drinking lots and taking drugs? It's old news. People want to read about footballers now. You do something wrong and there are going to be big headlines."
Mr Thomas speakes from a position of authority, having been a bit of a rascal himself, most notoriously because of an 18-month prison sentence in 1992 after he was found selling counterfeit notes to Wrexham's youth-team players.
He defends the excesses of the current generation, whose wealth, he said, makes them vulnerable to exploitation.
"There are alot of hanger-ons in football and people who want to make big money out of you," he said. "It's a big story about a footballer."
Newcastle defender Oliver Bernard will understand that statement. Earlier this year, a 16-year-old made rape allegations against him and it took three months for the police to throw out her claims.
He said: "It was difficult for me to understand. It was a girl trying to make money out of me because of who I was. It was all just a story, one big story."
Mr Thomas says more managers should adopt Sir Alex Ferguson's "Hardline" mentality with their young players.
Yet Ferguson may not be the best example -- During his publican days in Govan, his premises were a marketplace for sale of goods he described as having made "an unofficial exit" from the docks.

Michael Buble || For Once In My Life

For once in my life
I have someone who needs me
Someone I've needed so long
For once unafraid
I can go where life leads me
And somehow I know I'll be strong
For once I can touch
What my heart used to dream of
Long before I knew
Someone warm like you
Could make my dream come true
For once in my life
I won't let sorrow hurt me
Not like it's hurt me before
For once I've got someone
I know won't desert me
I'm not alone anymore
For once I can say
This is mine, you can't take it
As long as I've got love
I know I can make it
For once in my life
I've got someone who needs me
